Unless you have a hermit-like existence, it’s almost impossible to avoid winter bugs and colds and this year poses bigger threats than most. However aside from eating healthily, exercising and being particularly scrupulous when it comes to hand-washing, is there anything else one can do to avoid falling ill?
Echinacea is a traditional herbal remedy for relieving the symptoms of colds, flu and upper-respiratory tract infections, it stimulates the immune system helping fight infection.
However, unlike many other herbal remedies, some echinacea remedies have been scientifically proven to work – as with any remedy, it’s always worth reading the label as there is a wide range of products on the market. Usually available in tablet or tincture form – we’ve found this to be the most popular immune-booster.
Alternatively you could try Sambucol – this is a syrup made from black elderberry extract and vitamin C. Again, it has been laboratory-tested and is a tried trusted immune booster, plus it has the added benefit of being anti-viral. Its pleasant taste makes it a good choice for children.
Traditionally Vitamin C has been touted as the vitamin of choice in shifting colds and bugs but recently there has been a lot of research emerging from the US in particular promoting Vitamin D as a key defence against everything from forms of cancer and heart disease to flu and respiratory infection.
Adequate levels of Vitamin D from diet alone can be difficult to achieve and whilst exposure to sunlight produces Vitamin D, many westerners are deficient because of reduced exposure to or availability of sunlight in the Northern hemisphere.
