The annual Natural and Organic show in Olympia is usually a source of lots of exciting new products, but this year seemed a little light on truly exciting innovations – that is until we came across new Veatable Bars. We were a little bemused at first – a chilled snack bar made with vegetables? However, once we had tasted a few morsels, it all made sense. Veatable Bars are available in three varieties: Tomato Pizza, Thai Sweetcorn and Sweet Roasted Vegetable and each bar counts as one of your five a day!

We asked Helena Beveridge, of Crendon Foods, a few questions to find out more about Veatable bars:
1) Veatable Bars are a very innovative product, how did the idea come about?
Our children brought home a food diary from school, to keep a record of their eating habits, and I realised that we weren’t always getting to our 5 a-day. One of the problems was that the fruit and veg we ate with main meals wasn’t enough. We needed something healthier between meals. If you want a healthy snack you can choose a banana, but it dawned on us that there are ‘hungry moments’ during the day when what you really want is something savoury, not sweet. Those are the moments, perhaps at 5ish when the children are eating but you aren’t, that you reach for a big chunk of cheese or the crisps. We started to wonder if the world was ready for something like a savoury banana – filling, healthy, quick and convenient. So Howard, who’s pretty handy as a cook, set to work in the kitchen, using lots of vegetables and other tasty ingredients, such as gruyere, coriander and sweet chilli sauce. Our first ‘bars’ were more like fritters, sort of floppy and crumbly. It wasn’t easy getting it right, because we were adamant that each bar needed to contain at least 50% fresh veg, use only natural ingredients and taste great without being packed with fat or sugar. In the end it took the help of a food technologist, over 18 months and 500 different recipes to decide on three final flavours – Sweet Roasted Vegetable, Tomato Pizza and Thai Sweetcorn.
2) Where do you source your ingredients?
Our vegetables come from Beacon Foods, a family owned firm based in the Brecon Beacons National Park. They source their vegetables very carefully to avoid air miles whenever possible and use British growers whenever they can; and they puree and roast our vegetables before we bake them into our bars.

3) Which product has produced the biggest challenge?
The one which isn’t on sale yet ! Very early on, Howard came up with a great Cheese & Onion bar. It had a lovely mild, mellow taste and was my favourite. We’ve worked on that bar longer than any of the others, but it’s prone to tasting too strongly of onion and we can’t seem to get it consistently yummy. It’s such a shame because we think it would be a real hit with children. We’ll keep working on it though.
4) What’s the best thing about working for Crendon Foods?
Working with my husband. We do work well together, but it also means that my business partner entirely understands why I have to stop what I’m doing and look after our children. A lot of the people we work with have deliberately chosen a more flexible working lifestyle, men as well as women, and I for one love it when people assume you’ll understand that they need to fit their working day around the kids. After all, a lot of us are in the same boat. Though the downside is a lot of work gets done late at night – and I don’t enjoy that at all !
5) If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things could you not be without?
My own pillow, something to read and a laptop with internet access.

6) What’s the best compliment you’ve received for any of your products?
When my daughter’s piano teacher told me “Your Tomato Bar tastes so good I can’t believe it’s actually full of vegetables.”
